Do know what the purpose of a credit check is?

There has been a credit check done on you if you have ever bought a car, owned a home, or signed up for a credit card. It is also viewed by banks when you apply for loans, mortgages and credit; by landlords when you apply for a lease; and by employers when they are considering promoting or even hiring you. Your credit report is the single determining factor for whether you receive approval on a credit card or loan. A credit check is simply a history of your debts and a record of your payment history.

Your credit check is compiled by a credit bureau using information: from banks, merchants, and other creditors. There are 3 main credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. These three bureaus provide nationwide coverage of consumer credit information.

Because all of these other people have access to do a credit check on you, it's important to review your credit report on a regular basis. Get a copy and make sure that the information on file is complete and accurate. Review it carefully for inaccuracies or possible credit fraud.
